JACK HEMINGWAY (BUMBY)
Jack Hemingway – or ‘Mr. Bumby’, as he is known in A Moveable Feast – was Hadley and Ernest’s only child. He was born in Toronto (Hadley and Ernest were nervous of French hospitals) but grew up in Paris; the godson of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. Later, he served with US Intelligence during the Second World War. In 1944 he was captured, and was a prisoner of war in Germany until April 1945. Jack married in 1949: he and his wife Puck had three daughters: Joan (‘Muffet’) and the actors Margaux and Mariel Hemingway. Jack Hemingway, like his father, was an avid fisherman. He lived in Ketchum, Idaho and died in 2000, at the age of 77.
