PAULINE PFEIFFER PP-portrait

Pauline Pfeiffer or “Fife” was born in 1895 and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born into a rich Catholic family who would later set up their home in Piggott, Arkansas. As a young woman Fife worked for Vogue in New York and became engaged to her cousin. Fife, however, felt unsure of the engagement. Begging some time to think, she left for Paris. Here, Fife continued to work in editorial for  French Vogue and met many of the luminaries of 1920s Paris, including Sara and Gerald Murphy, John Dos Passos and, eventually, a couple called Ernest and Hadley Hemingway, at a party in the spring of 1925.
